December 18, 2022 -  Class Updates

1. Kids wrote Likhita japa for the first five minutes.
2. We started off the class with the opening prayer (Dhyana shloka - Om Saha Navavatu)
3. We practiced Mangala aarati (page 25 of handbook - https://www.chinmayavrindavan.org/images/Documents/2022CNJBVHandbook.pdf ), Om Jai Jagadish Hare (page 26), Chinmaya aarati (page 27), Shanti Mantras (page 28) and Pledge (page 29). 
4. We were joined by a JCHYK student, a tenth grader, who participated and learned how to teach a Balavihar class.
5. Mahabharata
1. Continuation of Adi parva
1. Karna learns from Parasurama
1.  Karna heard of Parasurama's hatred for Kshatriyas, and decided to go to him as a student. Karna disguised as a brahmana and requested Parasurama to teach him. Parasurama accepted him as a student.
2. Parasurama trained Karna well in the art of archery. He also trained him in the use of divine weapons, including the Brahmastra. 
   
3. One day, Parasurama was sleeping using Karna's lap as a pillow. A wasp stung Karna in his lap and as his guru was sleeping, Karna did not want to disturb him. When Parasurama woke up, he saw blood oozing out of Karna's wound and asked him what his real identity is, since a brahmana would not be able to withstand such pain. 
4. Karna revealed his true identity and got cursed by his angry guru. Parasurama cursed Karna such that he will not remember the mantra for the Brahmastra when it is needed the most.
2. Drupada and Shikandi
1. Drupada has a daughter named Shikandi
2. Shikandi is none other than Amba who was blessed with a boon that she would take revenge on Bheesma in her next birth
3. Capturing of Drupada by Pandavas
1. Dronacharya requested that his Guru Dakshina for teaching Kauravas and Pandavas is to capture the king Drupada. 
2. Kauravas first went to war with Drupada but Kauravas get defeated
3. Pandavas then went to war with Drupada and captured him
4. Dronacharya, having captured the king Drupada, took half of his kingdom and made Ashwatthama the king 
5. Drupada got humiliated by this incident
4. Drupada's yajna, Dhrshtadyumna and Draupadi
1. Drupada arranged for a yajna to get a son, who would kill Dronacharya
2. Drupada got a son named Dhrshtadyumna and a daughter named Draupadi
5. Wax palace
1. In Hastinapura, Yuddhishthira was declared the crown prince as he was the eldest of Kauravas and Pandavas
2. Duryodhana, because of his hatred towards Pandavas, had an evil plan to kill the Pandavas.
3. Duryodhana and his uncle Shakuni built a wax palace (made of combustible materials) in Varanavat
4. Duryodhana asked Pandavas and Kunti to go on a vacation and live in the wax palace
5. Vidura came to know about the evil plan and helped the Pandavas build a tunnel to escape the palace 
6. When the wax palace was set to fire as planned by Duryodhana, the Pandavas and Kunti escaped through the tunnel
7. Pandavas and Kunti took refuge in a forest
6. Shloka chanting - we reviewed and practiced verse 3 of Ganesha Pancharatnam
1. Kids did a great job in the class by following the chanting. Please ask them to practice
7. Kids reviewed and practiced verse 5 of Bhagavad Gita chapter 3.
   
8. Kids practiced the Bhagavad Gita chanting using the video - Verses 11 and 12 of Chapter 3
