· Review of previous lessons: Students reviewed G for God
· Topic of the day : H for Happiness: We talked about how they feel visiting pizza places, going shopping, having friends coming home for play.
· Activity #1 Students received a ticket to ride a Chinmaya Happy train. Leela, our new student, was the conductor of the train. The rule of riding this train is saying " We are happy and It's OK" and sing the song " We are happy Chinmaya Train, Hari Om, Hari Om). When all were aboard, Leela showed the Green Flag to start the train. The train stopped at 5 destinations that were displayed on the wall as well as on the slide show. The destinations were Playground, Toy Land ,Pizza Place, Amusement park, Candy Land. Unfortunately, at the Playground, they had to sit quietly and could not get on the equipment(slides, monkey bars) but in the disappointing situations, they recalled the rule : To say "It's OK, I am still happy). There were other disappointing destinations, Toyland got closed and there was a non-interesting Hardware store, Instead of Pizza, they had to eat daal and Roti, instead of amusement park rides they had to visit Dr's Office and get a shot. In all these destinations/ situations they recalled the rule of riding a train: Saying " It's OK, I am still happy". But at the end it was a surprise at candy land, they could collect candies.
· Discussions: Students talked about what makes them happy and what does not. It was pointed out to them that the same food, toys do not give the same happiness to all. One student said," I do not like bananas" . We pointed out that bananas do not tell anyone to be happy or sad ,it's your mind that tells you to be happy or sad with a given object or food. Sometimes the same food that we love makes us sick if we take too much in quantity( like too many candies). Also, Sometimes when you are sick, you cannot eat certain food (pizza) that you really like. So, it's your body, mind that tells you if you really feel happy or not with a certain food and a certain object. So, we always tell our mind to stay happy whether we get or not what we want. Our Mantra is " It's OK to not get it, I am still happy." We can stay happy all the time by accepting things as they are and make the best with what we have at this moment. May be in the future we will get what we want if we do not get it now.
