January 29 2023 -  Class Updates
  1. Kids wrote Likhita japa for the first five minutes.
  2. We started off the class with the opening prayer (Dhyana shloka - Om Saha Navavatu)
  3. Kids played Jeopardy to review the Mahabharata characters.
  4. Mahabharata
    1. Sabha parva
      1. Invitation of Pandavas for the game of dice
        1. Duryodhana, having been insulted in the palace of illusions, wanted to take revenge on Pandavas.
        2. Along with Shakuni, Duryodhana came up with an evil plan to insult Pandavas and make the Pandavas lose their prosperity by a game of dice.
        3. Dhrtarashatra got convinced by their (Duryodhana and Shakuni's) plan and sent Vidura as a messenger to invite Pandavas for a game of dice.
        4. Vidura conveyed the message to Yudhishthira, but at the same time warned him about the invitation.
        5. Yudhishthira did not want to disrespect the elders and having a weakness for the game of dice, agreed to the invitation.
      2. Disrobing of Draupadi
        1. Pandavas and Draupadi went to Hastinapura for the game of dice.
        2. Shakuni, having manipulated the dice, made the Pandavas to lose all the wealth and kingdom.
        3. Yudhishthira bet his brothers and lost them as well.
        4. Yudhishthira then bet Draupadi and lost her as well.
        5. Duryodhana ordered Dushasana to bring Draupadi to the sabha.
        6. Dushasana dragged Draupadi by her hair and forcefully brought her to the sabha.
        7. Duryodhana ordered Dushasana to disrobe Draupadi.
        8. As Dushasana started to pull Draupadi's sari, Draupadi surrendered to Lord Krsna
        9. Lord Krsna helps Draupadi by offering a surplus of sari so that she is not disrobed.
      3. Second game of dice
        1. Having seen the plight of Draupadi, Dhrtarashtra offered back the kingdom of Indraprastha to Yudhishthira and released the Pandavas and Draupadi.
        2. However, Duryodhana and Shakuni could not withstand and persuaded Dhrtarashtra to invite Pandavas for another game of dice, but this time, the loser has to go to forest for 12 years and be in incognito for 13th year. If identified during the year of incognito, the loser has to go to forest for another 12 years.
        3. Pandavas were invited for the second game of dice.
        4. Pandavas lost again.
      4. Pandavas get exiled for 12 years and one year of incognito. If Pandavas were identified during the year of incognito, then they will have to get exiled for another 12 years.
      5. With this, we come to the end of Sabha parva.
  5. Kids practiced the Bhagavad Gita chanting using the video - Verses 15, 16, 17 and 18 of Chapter 3

  6. Story of a Saint - Saint Tukarama
    1. Saint Tukarama was born in Maharashtra, in 1608.
    2. He was compassionate to all.
    3. He wrote famous poems in Marathi called Abhangas
    4. Example of an Abhanga
      1.  Dayaa kshamaa shantii tethe devaaci vasatii
      2. Meaning - Wherever there are virtues like compassion, forgiveness and peace, there the God dwells.
    5. He died at the age of 42 in 1650.
    6. Values to be learned from him - be compassionate and be forgiving.
  7. We enjoyed the performance of the ninth graders.
  8. Pledge in the Temple Hall.
