January 8, 2023 - Class Updates
We do not have class next sunday, January 15th, because of long weekend. Our next class is on January 22nd.
- Kids wrote Likhita japa for the first five minutes.
- We started off the class with the opening prayer (Dhyana shloka - Om Saha Navavatu)
- Shloka chanting - we reviewed and practiced verse 4 of Ganesha Pancharatnam
- Kids did a great job in the class by following the chanting. Please ask them to practice.

- Continuation of Adi parva
- The Pandavas and Kunti took refuge in a forest after escaping from the wax palace.
- Bhima marries Hidimbi
- A demon called Hidimba was living in that forest. He smelled human beings and wanted to eat them.
- Bhima confronted Hidimba and killed him.
- Hidimbi, sister of Hidimba wanted to marry Bhima.
- Kunti and the Pandavas agree to that and Bhima married Hidimbi.
- After a while, Bhima and Hidimbi had a son named Ghatotkacha.
- The Pandavas and Kunti move on, leaving Hidimbi and Ghatotkacha in the forest.
- Bhima kills Bakasura
- The Pandavas, disguised as brahamanas, reach Ekachakra village and take shelter in a brahmin's house.
- A demon called Bakasura was terrorizing the Ekachakra village.
- Everyday, a member from a chosen family has to take a cart full of food to Bakasura and sacrifice themselves.
- One day, it was the turn of the brahmin's family (in whose house Pandavas were living in) to satisfy the hunger of Bakasura.
- Kunti convinced the family and asked Bhima to go to Bakasura.
- Bhima killed Bakasura and the whole village celebrated.
- One day, the Pandavas and Kunti hear about Draupadi's swayamvara in Kampilya and started to head there.
- Pandavas meet Chitraratha
- On the way, the Pandavas and Kunti gets blocked by the gandharva, Chitraratha.
- Chitraratha gets defeated by Arjuna.
- Chitraratha came to know that the brahmanas were none other than Pandavas.
- Chitraratha gives them four divine horses.
- Pandavas continue their journey to Kampilya.
- Arjuna passes the skill test
- Drupada has arranged a swayamvara for Draupadi.
- The prince who passes the skill test can marry Draupadi.
- The skill test was to shoot an arrow at the eye of a fish which is fixated in a revolving wheel in the ceiling, by looking into the reflection of it in the pond below.
- None of the princes who came to swayamvara could pass the test.
- Arjuna who was disguised as a brahmana asked the king whether he could try the test.
- The king agreed and Arjuna (because of his concentration skills) passed the test.
- Arjuna married Draupadi.
- When the Pandavas and Draupadi went to meet Kunti, she told them to share what they brought without realizing the situation. Draupadi became the wife of the Pandavas.
- Dhrtarashtra and the Kauravas came to know that the Pandavas were alive.
- Bheesma and Vidura advise Dhrtarashtra to invite the Pandavas back and give half of the kingdom to Pandavas.
- Duryodhana and Dhrtarashtra decided to give the Pandavas the barren land called Khandavaprastha.
- The Pandavas with the help of Krsna, requested Indra devata to make Khandavaprastha a beautiful city and it became a fertile land and was named Indraprastha.
- Due to an incident that happened afterwards, Arjuna is exiled from Indraprastha.
- During the exile, Arjuna marries Subhadra, Krsna's sister.
- One day, Krsna and Arjuna happened to be on the banks of river Yamuna and saw the khandava vana.
- Khandava vana was occupied by poisonous animals and demons.
- Takshaka (the snake which will bite Parikshit later on), the king of snakes was living in the khandava vana.
- An asura named Mayasura was also living in the khandava vana.
- Agni devata requested Krsna and Arjuna to help him burn the forest.
- Khandava vana gets burnt and Takshaka escapes the fire.
- Mayasura asks Krsna and Arjuna to protect him. Mayasura was protected and he builds a palace for Pandavas.
- Adi parva ends here.
- Kids practiced the Bhagavad Gita chanting using the video - Verses 11 and 12 of Chapter 3
- Story of a Saint - Saint Kabira
- Saint Kabira was born in 1398 AD.
- He was an adopted son of a Muslim weaver couple Niru and Nima.
- His guru was Ramananda.
- He married Loi.
- He was always immersed in thoughts of God.
- His compositions called "Kabira ke Dohe" are famous all over India.
- He died in 1518 AD in Magahar in Uttar Pradesh.
- Kids were told a story of how he taught a person, a lesson to control anger.
- Values to be learned from him - Make mind pure.
- Aarati and pledge in the Temple Hall.
