Topic of the day: S for smile and T for truth

Activity #1  Brainstorming S for smile : We brainstormed why we smile. Students answered that we smile because we are happy. When we smile , we make other people happy, we make other people happy. We look prettier and smiling keeps us happy. Students saw 2 pictures: One picture of an adoring, smiling baby and another picture of  an angry frowning man. We realized that smiling requires less effort than frowning.

Activity #1 Coloring hidden smiley faces.

Activity #2 We had a laughathon listening to a story of a silly boy reciting the alphabet and becoming a chef to make a funny soup.

Story #1 : A Million-dollar smile. This was a story about a girl named Lisa who smiles at a person on a bench while she was on a morning walk with her mother. She did not realize how valuable her smile was. After the morning was over, when her mother was driving her to school, the car broke down. A passerby, who happened to be a car mechanic, stepped forward and fixed her car . He was the same person sitting on a bench whose day was filled with happiness due to Lisa's  Million-dollar smile!

Activity #3 We selected a student who had determined not to smile. Students tried different ways to make him smile, tickling his toes, telling a joke, telling a story , a duck walk etc. Finally in the game Simon says he had to smile. This activity was to demonstrate that we really don't need objects to make us smile.

Lesson 2 : T for truth

Brainstorming:  Students were presented with various scenarios where children lie. We lie to save us from trouble, or sometimes we have forgotten a fact or we feel we will benefit by lying. Lying helps us in the short run but in the long run we are losers. Ultimately truth wins.

Story #2 A boy who cried wolf. Those who were absent can watch the video.

Moral of the story: By lying, we can hurt ourselves and others around.

Activity #3  Game : It is hard to lie. Students sat in a circle and made gestures opposite to the word the teacher made. The person not making the opposite gesture is out of the game. Game continued until one person was left.

Inference: It was easy to make a gesture to what the word stands for. Dealing with truth is a lot simpler than fabricating lies.

As we Ran out of time we could not do other activities.

Home Work: Coloring pages S for smile T for truth.

Congratulations to students who participated in the shlokathon and earned points and prizes.
